Car Route Description from Bagdogra to Kalimpong
The journey can be divided into 4 phases. The first part is where your taxi crosses the urban centre of Siliguri town. Your cab will be driving through National Highway 10 which is also part of the Asian Highway network. By the time you cross the Salugara area on the outskirts of Siliguri, your taxi will have driven about 20 kilometres from Bagdogra. Expect some traffic snarls, especially in Matigara, Siliguri bypass and the Salugara area. A cab may take about an hour to cover this distance.
Once your vehicle has crossed Salugara, the second phase is a beautiful drive through Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary to Sevok. A drive of about 10 km would take just 10 minutes to cover. At Sevok you will be greeted by the mighty river Teesta. You may ask your taxi driver to stop here for a cup of tea. This is also the beginning of the third phase of your taxi ride through the hills. The Hilly terrain would offer you some beautiful glimpses. The next 35 km till Teesta may take travel time anywhere between 1 and 2 hours depending on the condition of the road and traffic congestion on this very popular highway. The road in this stretch is repaired and reconstructed almost continuously as it gets damaged regularly by natural and human elements such as very heavy rainfall, landslides, railway construction and hydroelectric dams.
The 4th and the last phase of the journey from Bagdogra to Kalimpong starts near Teesta Bazar, at this stage, you will be leaving river Teesta and driving uphill. This steep uphill journey of about 10 km will take you to the heart of Kalimpong. The travel time here may be about half an hour or so.

Brief Description of the route
From Bagdogra, your journey to Kalimpong begins by travelling through Siliguri town via National Highway 10. The initial stretch takes you along the Siliguri Bypass to the Salugara area, where the NJP-Kalimpong route merges with the highway. This part of the journey covers around 19 km from Bagdogra Airport and 12 km from NJP, passing through the crowded and bustling Siliguri corridor. This segment is less scenic but forms a vital connection to the hills.
At Salugara, the scenery shifts dramatically as you enter the lush greenery of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its diverse wildlife, including elephants. A scenic drive of about 13 km through the forested sanctuary brings you to Sevok, where the mighty Teesta River transitions from the hills to the plains. This marks the end of the plains and the start of your ascent into the hills.
As you continue, you’ll pass through quaint villages like Kalijhora, Lohapul, and Rambhibazar, eventually reaching Teesta Bazar, about 31 km from Sevok. Here, you’ll cross the Teesta River, moving to its left bank. A kilometre after crossing the Teesta Bridge, you’ll reach Chitrey. From Chitrey, Kalimpong is just 14 km away, but this final stretch is characterized by a steep and winding ascent, which tests the power of your vehicle's engine.
Due to the narrow, winding roads and sharp twists and turns in the hills, driving can be challenging. It’s advisable to avoid self-driving if you’re used to driving only on plains, as hill driving demands experience and skill. Instead, opting for an experienced local driver is a safer and more comfortable option.
